Museum of Transportation...again!

Since we are members of the Museum of Transportation, we schedule many trips out that way.  This time, we were lucky enough to bring GG with us and Amelia enjoyed showing her all of the ins and outs of one of her favorite places to play in St. Louis!

GG and Amelia on the tram to ride the train.  Being the MOT novice that GG is, she thought the tram ride WAS the train ride!  Good thing Amelia was along to explain the difference!

Ahoy Matey!  Amelia loves dressing up at the Creation Station--arrr!

Amelia was super excited to show GG the train that you can climb up into and blow the whistle.  Here they are taking a break from whistle blowing to appease mom with a picture.

Our membership ends in September and we still have lots of stamps to use--no doubt you will see more of the MOT on this site soon!

Amelia's New Family

Upon our recent trip to Old Navy, Amelia took a special interest in the mannequins at the store.

I thought it was funny enough at first, then she refused to leave.  I even walked out of the store, leaving her behind by herself with her "new family".  She positioned herself among the models and stood very still.  When people would walk by the store, she would smile, but not move.

After about 10 minutes of indulging her, I had to drag her out kicking and screaming, "I want to stay with these people, mommy!".

Nap Time Guarantee

There is only one guaranteed way to get Amelia to nap these days.  It involves water and a swimming suit and we used it twice this week!

Amelia breaking in her new sprinkler!

If the water pressure is just right, the balls become suspended in the water!

Chilling in the pool--this is the life!

Amelia hamming it up with her ladybug sprinkler.

Using the hose to perform "Be Our Guest", as Amelia says.  I guess she thinks the water flying around everywhere looks like the champagne dancing from the movie.  She even says things like, "The spoons and forks are dancing on this side and the napkins are dancing in front of me!".

Update from the Garden, once again

Hopefully the four readers I have of this blog are not getting sick of hearing about our garden.  Suffice it to say that I am excited (and even a little shocked) that things are actually growing beautifully in our backyard.  So, please just bear with me!

This picture shows Jason's master carpentry work and the cage he built to protect our vegetables from rabbits, squirrels, and mostly our dog, Truman.  Some plants couldn't go under the cage due to the heights which they will grow.

I was trying to drag Amelia away from our pool to stand next to our gigantic sunflower, but it just wasn't happening.  The sunflower is now taller than me, which is a pleasant surprise because I thought I had accidentally bought the 3 ft. variety.  I think the flowers are getting ready to bloom on one of the sunflower stalks.

This is our monster romaine lettuce that we just picked.  I didn't measure it, but the thing was probably pretty close to two feet tall!  We harvested lots and lots of lettuce this week and have been enjoying salads, BLT sandwiches, wraps, and the like.  Truth be told, though, we are hardly making a dent in our lettuce stash.

The less impressive (but still delicious) lettuce.  I am not sure what this type is called, but I've found it to be quite flavorful--as far as lettuce goes, anyway.

One of our tiny pea pods.  We need to harvest soon because the second batch we planted will probably be ready in a few weeks.

Do you see that zucchini in there?  We actually have several now.  It has been an interesting experience watching them develop--I had no idea where the fruit would grow and it turns out it was the stem of the flower!

A few of our tomatoes!  We have over 20 green ones.  At the rate they are growing, I am pretty sure they will all be ready to eat while we are out of town on vacation.

The whole deal!

Its come a long way, wouldn't you say??

Roller Coaster Riding

I've been intending to write this blog entry for many months now.  But, truth be told, every time I sit down to write it, the story changes.  I believe it is finally done changing--for awhile anyway.

My story, which is probably the most personal I have put on this blog, started way back around Christmastime.  I had decided to apply to graduate school for occupational therapy, which is something I have been wanting to do for some time now.  However, between having a child and moving to and from Chicago, the timing wasn't right--until now.  Or so I thought.

Over holiday break, I spent considerable amounts of time preparing admission essays, contacting those I wanted to write me letters of recommendations, and filling out the lengthy application.  I also decided to get serious about preparing for the GRE as that was a requirement at the particular school I was most interested in applying to.  The GRE had been my single biggest deterrent to applying to grad school--I was absolutely terrified to take it.

Fast forward a few months.

I met the January 31 deadline for all of the admission requirements (a few days early even!), but shortly before I sent all of the materials in, I found out that I was pregnant.  We were ecstatic as we had been trying for about 8 months at that point.  Because I had already put so much work into applying for school, I opted to go ahead and send everything in and deal with exactly what that would mean later.  My due date was in September, so I figured I could defer for one year and start when the baby was almost one year old.

Unfortunately, however, a few days before we left to visit Disneyworld, I started spotting and eventually ended up losing the baby right before our trip.  I don't wish to revisit that time of my life, but suffice it to say that it is the worst thing I have ever gone through.  Surprisingly, the trip to Florida really helped me emotionally deal with what my body was physically going through.   There was definitely something about putting all of our focus on making the trip special for Amelia that made me realize how very lucky we are to have such an amazing little girl.

At the end of February, I took the GRE and by early March I had received my acceptance letter to the best OT program in the country (which happens to be right here in St. Louis)!  This was fantastic news, of course, but a part of me kept wondering when we would have time to have the second child we so badly wanted.  Although we discussed putting off trying until the end of the 2 year program, it wasn't something I wanted to do being 30 and having fertility issues already.  We decided to continue trying and continue the process of beginning graduate school in the fall at the same time.

To my extreme surprise, in late April I began having early pregnancy symptoms--just after returning from our DC trip.  After getting no fewer than 3 positive tests,  I skipped the cute ways of telling Jason and the grandparents the news and very matter-of-factly told them what was going on.  Needless to say I have been incredibly paranoid this time around.  My poor doctor's office was fielding almost daily calls from me for awhile.  But, a couple of weekends ago, I reached the magic "12" week mark and have had two ultrasounds, the last of which showed a tiny baby moving about with a quick 183 heartbeat.  The doctor actually used the word "perfect" on more than one occasion during that visit, which was reassuring--for about a week.

I had another appointment today, at 13 weeks and 4 days and heard the tiny, whooshing heartbeat again.  The heartbeat was a little slower this time, 156 to be exact, and the doctor mentioned it was "being a boy today".

Interestingly, I have been extremely sick--more sick than I was when I was pregnant with Amelia--which I didn't think was possible.  I am on two different medications to help, but am still trying to find the balance on how best to make them work for me.

As for graduate school, the program has been incredibly supportive and is allowing me to defer entrance for one year.  All of my scholarships are still in place and I will become part of the class of 2012.   I think it is going to be incredibly difficult to enter a program with a 4 year old and an 8 month old, but I certainly would not have it any other way.

So, I guess I am officially announcing my pregnancy!  And to answer those questions that always seem to come....

Due Date: December 27, 2009

I'm 13.5 weeks.

No, we will not be finding out the gender. And, honestly, I don't care what it is.  If I had the opportunity to pick I don't even know what I would choose.  It would be nice to have one of each, but it would also be nice to have sisters--something I always wanted.

I am about 99% sure this is the last one!

We have been throwing around names--nothing definite.

So, be on the lookout for more pregnancy posts to come!

Father's Day continued...

Father's Day 2009 was definitely my favorite since Jason's been a dad.  We got to see so much of our family and also got to enjoy time together with just us, too.   I had it in my head that I really wanted to make Jason and my dad bookmarks this year with photo booth pictures of Amelia and I.

So, on Friday we headed to a local mall and scouted out all of the photo booths available.  Sounds ridiculous, right?  I had no idea there were so many varieties!  I was just getting ready to give up and head to mall #2, when I finally found what I was looking for (it was seriously the 8th booth I had looked at).  And, since "Introduce Amelia to the fun of a photo booth" is an item on my 101 things list, I felt like I was killing two birds with one stone.

Amelia had a blast!  Seriously, it has to be the best $3 I have ever spent for her entertainment.  Too bad it went by so fast, we will definitely have to go again.

Later at home, she helped me pick up paper to use on the bookmarks for both dad and papa.  I was really happy with the way they turned out!

Daddy's Bookmark:

Papa's Bookmark:

These would make a great addition if you are giving a book as a gift!  I wish I would have thought of that a little earlier...

After assembling the bookmarks, Amelia and I worked on creating a scavenger hunt for Father's Day morning.  We wrote 7 clues, including this one:

"When people come to our house, this is where they knock.
It's white, six-paneled, and has a dead bolt lock".

Amelia wasn't to sure about this whole hunt thing, luckily she got on board Sunday morning.

We started the day  by taking Jason the Sunday newspaper and coffee in bed.  Amelia hand delivered his card which contained the first clue for the scavenger hunt.  Some of the clues were connected to treats (like candy or the bookmark) and it was fun watching Amelia drag Jason all over the house--all three levels and even outside!

Some of the scavenger hunt clues:

He finally found his gift (a new saute pan that will really be a gift to us all!) in Amelia's playhouse outside.  After the hunt, it was time for breakfast.  The menu included French Toast Casserole and a fresh fruit salad.

After breakfast, it was Jason's idea (I swear) to tackle the basement and get it organized.  Since it was his day, I had to oblige.  After a couple hours of group effort in the underground, the basement came out looking so much better.  So good, in fact, that I will soon be able to check out another item on my 101 list--"Organize basement so that everything fits on two shelving units".  We maybe have another hour to go and it will be done!

Later in the day, we all took lunch to GG and Papa's house and then after naps had dinner with Jason's family.  It was really a full, fun-filled day and I am so lucky to have spent it with so many of my favorite people! And perhaps even more lucky to have such wonderful people in my life!

Father's Day 2009

Gimme a "D"....

Gimme an "A"........

Gimme another "D"......
What's that spell?

Dad, father, protector, playmate, bedtime tucker in, meal preparer, taxi driver, boo boo smoocherer, swimming buddy, horsey, bubble blower, fashion consultant, giver of baths, bulldozer operator, tent builder, block destroyer, conductor, kiss stealer, book reader, breakfast date, and the most important man in Amelia's life.  Hopefully now and forever!

Happy Father's Day!

Under the Sea

Amelia had a blast at the birthday party of the summer!  Her best friend, Miss Natalie Rose, turned 3 exactly 7 days after Amelia.  Since it would seem that all girls in this age group love Ariel, Natalie's party had an Under the Sea party!

Here Amelia is digging for treasure at the beach.

Oh good!  She scored a candy necklace.  Later she found a diamond ring and some gold coins!

Here, Amelia is sporting the mermaid fins that Natalie's mom made for each party attendee.  She has become quite the seamstress (although she'll try to tell you otherwise).

And here is the birthday girl herself, with her amazing mermaid cake--also created by her talented mom!

the cake!

Amelia had such a blast at the party she had no interest in leaving when it was time to head out.  Its always a great time whenever we hang out at Natalie's house!

Garden Update

No joke that every time I take pictures of our garden for the blog, by the time I get around to actually writing the entry, the pictures are quite outdated.

Again, these are from the weekend (only 4 days ago, but the plants have once again doubled in size).  We were able to pick all of the radishes and, in turn, plant some more!

Check out our gigantic lettuce!  Yes, it is as big as it looks!  It has provided us with enough lettuce for several salads and there is still lots more.  This is only 1 of 6 heads ready to be picked!

Amelia holding the enormous lettuce!

I'm pretty sure no one but myself can find the tiny, green tomato in this picture, but rest assured on Saturday we found one!  Today when I checked, I spotted 4!

Here's the whole deal.  But, if you saw it in our backyard now you wouldn't recognize it as the same garden!  And with tonight's rain, I am guessing we are in for another growth spurt soon!

Our garlic is coming up!  Well, at least 3 of the 4 cloves we planted.  We put another one in the ground on Saturday.  We are unsure how long it will take until its ready to be picked, so we will just have to keep an eye on it!

Next on the harvesting list?  Looks like the spinach will be ready to be picked soon and the only 5 heads of lettuce, of course!  Should be a bountiful summer!

Play Time

If you know Amelia, you know she has an undying love for all things princess and her beloved Belle tops that list!    I am still confused as to where she gets all of this girly girl stuff from, but I have decided to stop fighting it.  On occasion, I will even indulge her with opportunities to get all princessified.

When my friend, Sarah, emailed me with a subject line of "I bet Amelia would love this!", I was intrigued.  The email contained information about a Beauty and the Beast theater performance she had come across that was put on by a group called Life Light Theater.  Although I had never heard of the group before and the performance was in Wentzville, I didn't think I could pass up the chance to take Amelia.

Upon further inspection of the website, I noticed the group was also hosting a "Mrs. Pott's Tea Party".  Check out this description!

Belle and Mrs. Potts extend a personal invitation to all the Princesses and Princes to attend the Belle and Mrs. Potts Tea Party and Luncheon for an enchanting afternoon full of fantasy and fun.  Guest will meet their favorite Beauty and the Beast characters while enjoying  delicious tea sandwiches, Fairy Wand fruit kabobs, sweet treats, get autographs in their take -home memory book, and lots of picture opportunities with Disney's Beauty and the Beast characters in a festive setting.  Don't forget your camera!

Once again, I was totally hooked.  So we attended the Tea Party on Thursday night with Amelia's friend, Natalie and then the play performance on Friday with Jason.

Even though I played up the tea party as part of a birthday surprise we had planned for her, I didn't tell her where we were going.  She didn't care, though,  Amelia just loved the chance to wear her Belle dress again!   ( You may remember she was Belle for HALLOWEEN).  As we were entering the building, one of the ladies ahead of us turned around and said, "Oh, are you guys here for the tea party?" and Amelia said, "No".  She was totally clueless, but happy to be along nonetheless.

Trying to capture some of the tea party decorations...

Dining on "magic wand fruit kabobs" and chicken salad sandwiches.

The fancy dessert that looked like a tiny wedding cake.  Amelia pretty much destroyed the cake so that she could eat only the strawberry icing in between the cake layers.

The costumes were really impressive.  Here is Amelia with Mrs. Potts.  She was very unsure when all of the characters arrived.  This was the only person she agreed to have her snapshot taken with.  She was especially wary of Gaston--smart girl!

All of the characters...

Amelia agreed to have her picture taken with everyone on two conditions:  1.  I had to be in the picture with her.  2.  She would not stand anywhere near Gaston.

Still seem to be missing the ol' smile here.

Jason and I got a pretty big kick out of taking her to the play Friday night.  She again wore her Belle dress and was so excited to see all of the characters she knows and loves come alive on the stage.  She clapped with great enthusiasm and cried when intermission came--"I want to see the rest of the plllllaaaaaayyyyy!".  She was fine once she understood it was only a break.  If snack consumption is any indication of her interest in the play, she didn't even request a single snack until about 15 minutes into the second half.  This is unprecedented.

The youth in this production really did a fantastic job!  I will be keeping my eye open for future performances they decide to put on.

The night went so well, that we are planning on taking her to the Muny later this month to see Annie--another favorite movie of hers.  (and a non-princess one!  yeah!).
